Kenawat, Adena Coffee’s first origin, is a village with a remarkable story. Once at the center of a separatist movement, it was heavily affected by the conflict between the Free Aceh Movement and the Indonesian military in the early 2000s. During this time, Kenawat was seen as a rebel stronghold because one of the movement’s leaders was from there. Coffee farms were abandoned, and the village gained a negative reputation.Even after the 2004 Aceh tsunami and the peace agreement that followed, Kenawat still faced challenges. Coffee buyers hesitated to buy from the village due to its stigma, making farmers lose interest in coffee production. However, things began to change when the community, led by a young local named Fahman Yoga, started working together to produce high-quality coffee.Today, Kenawat has transformed into a thriving center for coffee production. It even earned recognition by ranking in the top 10 of the Cup of Excellence in the 2022/2023 season. This shift from conflict to agricultural success is a powerful story of recovery, reconciliation, and resilience.
